Cooling Yoga Poses for Hot Weather

July 22, 2011

During summer’s stickiest days, it can be tempting to forgo your regular yoga practice in favor of lounging in front of a fan (even better—with an icy drink). But when the mercury rises, try doing a few cooling stretches instead of skipping your routine altogether. These moves, from Whole Living magazine, include gentle variations on familiar poses like Pigeon, Savasana and Shoulder Stand. Each pose is designed to be grounding and soothing, releasing tension and increasing the calming, cooling flow of oxygen in the body without building up excess heat. For extra cooling benefits, practice early in the morning (when temperatures are at their lowest) and make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Take five minutes to practice one of these poses today, sprinkle a few into your regular routine, or follow the whole sequence to experience full-on cool: Cooling Summer Yoga Poses.
