Five Reasons to Start Running

Running is one of the easiest things to do—everyone knows how to run—and it has enormous health payoffs, yet it remains a daunting form of exercise for many people. If you’re one of those people, read on for five reasons why you shouldn’t be afraid to start running—and links to Yen Yoga’s upcoming workshops built to turn you (yes, you) into a runner.

1. It’s cheap. You could blow a whole paycheck on fancy, high-tech running gear. But all you really need is a good pair of sneakers, comfy clothes, a supportive sports bra (for the ladies), and the great outdoors.

2. It’s a great way to get healthy. Few forms of exercise burn as many calories as running does (700-850 calories in an hour, at the highest exertion level). Running builds muscle strength as well as cardiovascular endurance—giving you a lean, toned body and a strong, healthy heart. It can keep your cholesterol levels in check, lower your blood pressure, boost your immune system, and build bone density to ward off osteoporosis. And it’s a great way to lose weight and/or maintain a healthy weight.

3. It can ward off disease. Runners are at a lower risk for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and stroke. Plus, the more active you are, the less likely you are to develop certain cancers: According to Women’s Health magazine, a recent study in the British Journal of Cancer calculated that the “most active” (walking briskly 5-6 hours/week) people were 24 percent less likely to develop colon cancer than the “least active” people (30 minutes of walking/week); and a study by the National Cancer Institute showed that women of a normal weight who reported the highest levels of “vigorous activity” (running, tennis, aerobics) had about a 30 percent lower risk of breast cancer when compared with women who did no vigorous activity.

4. It’s like detox—without the fasting and juices. Running increases oxygen flow throughout your entire body. As you work up a sweat, this oxygen flow flushes out the “gunk,” clearing your body of toxins. A side-effect of less toxins in the body? Increased energy and a greater feeling of overall vitality.

5. You’ll feel great. Running has been shown to decrease stress and anxiety, and has even been used in the treatment of clinical depression. Regular runners report experiencing an increase in confidence and self-esteem—especially when they set a running goal, like training for a 5k.

    It is indeed great, and cheap as well. Running is a great choice for many people and can start to return results almost immediately.
