The New York Times recently published a gorgeous collection of photographs featuring yogis and their yoga-related tattoos. The photos, stunning black and white images captured by photographer Piotr Redlinski, showcase how deeply personal body art can be.

In the collection’s intro, Emily S. Rueb writes: “For some yoga practitioners, the body is a sacred vessel that should not be tainted. For others, the skin represents a blank, movable canvas for tattoos displaying thoughts, texts and deities that inspire and inform their practice.”
